Originally this page was called Australian Littoral, however for web clarity I have simplified it to Australian Beaches
littoral a & n 1 a. Of or on the shore. 2. n. Region lying along the shore. . . (OED)
The black and white photographs of Australian eaches, the Australian coast and inlets, are a return to a subject I previously explored on the English coast from 1975 to 1980. The new images started with work at Broke Inlet without me consciously realising where my landscape work was heading. Following the break of thirty years the approach to my Australian Beaches work is different to my English Beaches, but is still an exploration of edge in constant flux
Broke Inlet, S 34 59' E 117 24', is in D'Entrecasteaux National Park in Western Australia. Broke Inlet is the estuary of the Shannon River, the Inlet River and the Forth River. Broke Inlet breaches to the sea only in winter. The edge of Broke Inlet is sand with gneiss outcrops of rock. There is strong evidence of severe loss of peat soils at the northern shore of Broke Inlet lost during a recent DEC/CALM "controlled burn" disaster
